Smart TVs, cameras, IP phones, computers and access points: homes and offices have more and more connected devices. Relying on Wi-Fi alone often isn't enough. The answer is structured cabling, the tidy infrastructure that brings data wherever it's needed.
How a structured network is built
The heart is the patching cabinet (rack), from which horizontal cables run to the RJ45 outlets in each room. Every outlet is terminated on a patch panel and connected to the switch. This "star" architecture, defined by the EN 50173 standards, keeps the network tidy and easy to change.
Category 6 or 6A?
For most installations we use category 6 copper cable (Gigabit Ethernet) or 6A, which supports 10 Gigabit up to 100 metres. Category 6A is the most future-proof choice for offices and premium homes. Where long backbones or interference immunity are needed, we move to fibre optics.
Why not just Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is convenient but shared and sensitive to walls and interference. A cabled backbone feeding several distributed access points ensures even coverage and stable performance: Wi-Fi becomes great precisely when it sits on good cabling.
