When designing a network, one of the most common questions is: copper or fibre optics? The answer depends on distances, required performance and environment. Often the best solution combines both.
Copper: simple and versatile
Copper cable (cat. 6/6A) carries both data and, via PoE (Power over Ethernet), power for cameras, access points and IP phones. It's inexpensive, easy to terminate and perfect for runs up to 100 metres: ideal for the horizontal networks of home and office.
Fibre optics: distance and speed
Fibre transmits light pulses: immune to electromagnetic interference, it covers hundreds of metres or kilometres and reaches very high speeds. It's the must-have choice for backbones, building-to-building links and environments with strong interference (warehouses, proximity to machinery).
Single-mode or multi-mode
Multi-mode fibre is cheaper and suited to short internal distances; single-mode covers long distances and is the standard for carrier connections. The right choice depends on the project: we assess it case by case.
The rule of thumb
In short: copper for user outlets and PoE, fibre for backbones, long distances and noisy environments. A well-designed cabling system uses each technology where it performs best, with no waste.
