Electrical panels: design, wiring and maintenance

26 April 2026 5 min read

The electrical panel distributes and protects the entire system. A well-made panel is safe, tidy and easy to manage; a poorly made one is a source of faults and risks. Here's what really matters.

Design and sizing

It all starts with calculation: total power and load diversity, main breaker current, busbar and cable cross-sections, and breaking capacity matched to the prospective short-circuit current at the point of installation. An undersized component is a hazard, an oversized one is a waste.

Protection discrimination

Discrimination ensures that, in case of a fault, only the downstream protection nearest the problem trips, leaving the rest of the system in service. It's essential especially in commercial and industrial settings, where a total shutdown is costly.

Heat: the CEI EN 61439 standard

Devices dissipate heat: the CEI EN 61439 standard requires verifying the panel's thermal balance, sizing the enclosure, ventilation and any cooling. A panel that runs too hot ages quickly and becomes unreliable.

Wiring and documentation

Conductors sized and colour-coded to standard, correct lugs, respected tightening torques, wires labelled and shown on the as-built diagram: this care is what reduces faults and speeds up any future maintenance.
